Land of Smiles To Take Over Vancouver This Weekend
As the 2014 ‘Discovering Thailand’ festival kicks off in downtown Vancouver today, CT was invited to the Royal Thai Consulate-General’s Vancouver residence to sample some Thai culture at its very best.
Select media were treated to a fashion show, traditional dance performances and cooking demonstrations – and if the event was anything to go by, the Discovering Thailand festival is sure to be something special this weekend.
The eclectic festival will feature everything from Thai boxing and fruit carving to classical Thai dance and a Thai spa booth.
Consul-General Sutthiluck Sa-ngarmangkang – Thailand’s very first female consul appointment in Vancouver – explained that the festival honours the Queen of Thailand’s birthday this month.
Sa-ngarmangkang also told CT that the consulate is working very closely with the Canada’s travel agent community in a bid to increase connections between the two countries. She highlighted that a Silkway Travel booth with be present at this weekend’s celebrations in downtown Vancouver.
She said that Thailand currently welcomes around 200,000 Canadian tourists each year – mostly to escape the cool winter temperatures – and that the destination has recently witnessed a rise in medical tourism.
