Travellers departing New Orleans for Caribbean-bound or Mississippi River cruises have it good...really good. While some ports function chiefly as a transit hub – a place one wouldn't want to linger too long – staying a few extra days in NOLA is a given, with an endless supply of culinary and cultural experiences to indulge in. For travel advisors, a pre- or post-cruise add-on is a tidy upsell and options abound, varying by neighbourhood and lodging type. Here's our cheat sheet for selling more New Orleans to cruisers.

Pre- and Post- Cruise Itineraries

The 3-day Essential New Orleans Itinerary

Day 1: Travellers should start the day with a plate of beignets from Café du Monde and a visit to St. Louis Cathedral. Literary tours, ghost tours, Segway tours and carriage tours are all great ways to familiarize yourself with the city. Right before dusk, take a stroll down Bourbon Street and stop for some Creole cuisine at a famous restaurant such as Galatoire's or Arnaud’s.

Day 2: Spend most of the second day in Uptown and The Garden District. A ride on the St. Charles Streetcar is a must, followed by “Jazz Brunch” at Commander’s Palace. Take the rest of the day to explore the shops on Magazine Street, tour the Garden District and get spooked on the Lafayette Cemetery Tour.

Day 3: For something one-of-a-kind on your third day, take a Swamp Tour for views of wild alligators, boars and other critters. Give yourself some time to explore some of the remaining sights and neighborhoods, including City Park, the Sculpture Garden and the Warehouse and Arts District. Finish the day off with a plate of oysters from Acme Seafood in the French Quarter.

New Orleans for Families
From the French Quarter to The Garden District, there are plenty of family-friendly places to explore in The Crescent City. The Audubon Aquarium, Zoo and Insectarium are all worth a stop, along with The Louisiana Children’s Museum and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park. Jeri Nim’s Soda Shop in the WWII Museum provides families with sweet treats and a snapshot of history while Deanie’s and Oceana Grill are more suited for full, New Orleans-style meals.

New Orleans for Foodies
A haven for culinary connoisseurs, there is no shortage of places to eat amazing food in New Orleans. Beignets at Café du Monde are a must, followed by po-boys or some classic NOLA gumbo. Antoine’s is the place to go for Oysters Rockefeller while Galatoire’s and Dooky Chase are can’t-miss lunch stops while in town. Vietnamese food, crawfish, fried chicken and pralines are just a few more food items that are necessary to indulge in while breezing through the city’s James Beard winning restaurants.

New Orleans for Culture Vultures
From quirky historic tours to dramatic festivals, New Orleans has a unique culture that is unmatched. The Arts and Warehouse District, Treme and Bayou Road are all great spots to start. For museum lovers, The Backstreet Cultural Museum – a peek into Mardi Gras Indian culture – and The Southern Food and Beverage Museum are both noteworthy picks. On the festival side, the colorful city boasts everything from Vietnamese Tet Fest and the Caribbean Bayou Bacchanal to jazz events such as the Congo Square New World Rhythm Festival.
