Sweet Home Chicago Woos Vancouver Agents
Kristi Shuda, Cathy Domanico and Charmaine Singh of Choose Chicago celebrate in Vancouver.
Some 75 travel professionals were treated to a presentation about Chicago and a swish evening soiree on the terrace of Vancouver’s stylish Shangri-La Hotel this week.
The event came hot on the heels of Choose Chicago reaching a major landmark, as vice president of tourism of leisure sales, Cathy Domanico, explained to the crowd: “When Mayor Rahm Emanuel came into office four years ago, he gave us a goal that at the time seemed incredibly monumental. He said to us that by the year 2020 he wanted to see us bring 50 million people to the city of Chicago. Guess what? We accomplished that last year.”
Tourism sales manager Kristi Shuda gave a fascinating presentation showcasing the city’s fine dining options, jaw-dropping museums, first class theatre district, shopping options, legendary music and sports venues and famous annual events. She even highlighted the fact that Chicago has been nominated the ‘Top Drinking City in North America’—an accolade that was met with great applause and laughter by the crowd.
Charmaine Singh, Choose Chicago account director in Canada, went on to highlight the corporate aspect of the destination.
“Business out of Vancouver is growing and the potential is endless,” she said. “Chicago is home to over 30 Fortune 500 companies over 400 headquarters for corporations. What we have found in Canada is that there is a huge opportunity to grow pre or post-days for business travellers. It’s a great opportunity and we’re hearing of more and more people doing it. This is one of our goals.
“When we took over the Canadian office three years ago, Chicago wasn’t even in the Top 20 cities from Canada. Within three years we are now number seven. Next year we’re going to number three!”
