Hook, Line & Sinker - There’s Plenty Of Angling Action On Myrtle Beach Piers

When they talk about trying their luck in the Myrtle Beach area, they don’t just mean the casino boats.
Fishing is a major pastime, and the Myrtle Beach area makes it easy for visitors to toss out a line. You don’t even need a licence, except to fish from a private boat or to go surf fishing. Angling from local piers or from rental or charter boats does not require a permit.

Pier fishing is particularly popular. There are eight piers along the Grand Strand, some up to a quarter-mile long. All sell bait, several have restaurants and/or ice cream shops and some rent tackle. All charge anglers a daily admission fee. Myrtle Beach State Park Pier’s is the lowest at $4.50; the others charge $6 to $9. Most also charge a nominal spectator fee – $1 or so.

Captain Dick’s Marina at Murrells Inlet is a well-known deep-sea operator. A half-day trip costs $44 for adults, $26 for kids – an all-day trip costs $90 and $56 Charter boats provide bait and tackle.
Common catches off the pier and from the surf are whiting, bluefish, flounder, Pompano and Spanish mackerel. Deep-sea catches include black bass, red snapper, amberjack and tuna.

Whatever your catch, it can be entered free in the Grand Strand Fishing Rodeo, sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. The rodeo runs from April to October and is restricted to recreational fisherman. Entries are eligible for more than $20,000 in cash and prizes, including monthly and annual awards.
